Guatemala Outreach Update
Many of our Mt. Olive members have traveled to Guatemala over the last six years and have great memories from our mission trips there. We have helped many people but the need for assistance after the recent volcanic eruptions is great and our church family has come together to send much needed funds via CALMS.
On July 1st a small CALMS relief team traveled to Guatemala to work with Dr. Elry, M.D. in the little villages of Amatilan and La Trinidad, just outside Guatemala City. I have met and stayed with Dr. Elry and his wife and know of their dedication to the people that have been affected by this disaster. Dr. Elry is uniquely qualified because not only is he a medical doctor, that lives and works among the indigenous people of the area, but he is also ordained as a Lutheran pastor. He is able to treat the respiratory infections, allergic reactions and skin problems associated with the eruption as well as care for his patients emotionally and spiritually.
Through the generosity of our congregation we will be sending a little over $200 through CALMS to help support Dr. Elry’s efforts. He is using any donations for antibiotics, asthma inhalers, oral and injectable medications, cough and allergy remedies, skin creams, vitamin E, hydrocortisone, triple antibiotic creams, gastritis medications, muscle relaxants and analgesics. He is also trying to make nutritional supplements available for the 200 or so displaced people that have been arriving by foot at his little medical clinic daily looking for help.
His immediate need is $1,500 to purchase medicine to treat the hurting. That $200 is a start and will go a long way, but if you feel a need to give we are still accepting donations and 100% of what we receive will be passed along through CALMS to Dr. Elry.
Thank you for helping us reach out and share the love of Jesus and your continued support of our mission efforts to help the people of Guatemala!
